Ghana’s political landscape paused on January 5, 2026, as Naser Toure Mahama, the four-term Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, was laid to rest following his sudden passing at age 60.
Sudden Passing and Legacy Naser Toure Mahama, a dedicated National Democratic Congress (NDC) lawmaker from Kue in Oti Region, died on January 4 at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital after a brief illness. He served as Vice Chairman of Parliament’s Energy Committee and championed constituency projects like “Operation Cement Your Lungu” for sanitation, road improvements in Nima, and upgrades to the local police station and hospital.
Funeral Proceedings In line with Islamic traditions, a Janazah prayer took place at 10 a.m. at the Ayawaso East constituency office on Kanda Highway, led by the National Chief Imam, before burial at Madina Cemetery. Ayawaso North MP Yussif Jajah coordinated swift arrangements with support from President John Dramani Mahama to release the body.
Tributes from Colleagues Sam George, MP for Madina, mourned the loss of a “pillar” in Greater Accra’s caucus, recalling a recent meeting where Toure showed no signs of illness. Jajah described him as a respected leader whose unassuming, thoughtful demeanor inspired young politicians, leaving big shoes to fill. Mourners gathered at his Spintex residence, with a pall of grief over the constituency.
