The tight-knit Glefe community in Greater Accra is reeling from the savage killing of 19-year-old Odartey, found lifeless with deep machete wounds last week. “This isn’t our Glefe—gangs from nearby areas are invading our peace.”
Residents voice deep fears: rising youth unemployment fueling crime, poor street lighting inviting attacks at night, and delayed police response eroding trust. “Our children can’t walk home safely anymore,” laments Elder Lamptey. Calls grow for community patrols, better surveillance, and youth job programs. “We demand justice for Odartey and safety for all,” they chant. Glefe unites, vowing no more silence.
What happened
Eyewitnesses and family accounts say that Emmanuel was at the Glefe transformer area when he was set upon by three men, allegedly led by a suspect known in the area as “Nii Money.” The group reportedly dragged him into the bush near the transformer, beat and stabbed him multiple times, and left him for dead; he was later found with severe injuries and pronounced dead at the hospital.
Family and community reaction
His sister, in emotionally charged TikTok and Facebook videos, has detailed how Emmanuel had plans for school and work, and she is demanding that the suspect be arrested and charged with murder. Other residents and community elders have condemned the killing, calling the suspect’s alleged gang a nuisance to the area and warning of broader insecurity if the authorities delay action
