According to oral traditions and historical accounts, the Ga are believed to have migrated from the east of the Accra plains, with some narratives tracing their ancestors as far back as the Lake Chad region and the Niger River basin.
Scholars generally agree that the Ga entered what is now Ghana between the 15th and 17th centuries, moving down the Niger River and crossing the Volta River before settling on the Accra plains. Some traditions also connect the Ga with Yoruba‑speaking groups from the eastern part of modern‑day Nigeria, suggesting shared cultural and linguistic links with the Yoruba long before the arrival of Europeans.
